The
George Inn is a 17th century coaching inn freehouse in the scenic
village of Croscombe. The pub is directly on the A371, just two miles
from the market town of Shepton Mallet, and two miles from England's
smallest city, Wells. There are many delightful walks from the pub,
and dogs are welcome
too.
Purchased
by Peter and Veryan Graham in July 2000, the pub has enjoyed numerous
changes - both small and large. In the main
bar a large inglenook fireplace with real log fires
warms the winter nights, and soft lighting, the family's grandfather
clock, and comfy chairs add to the ambience of the area. The areas
on both sides of the bar were enlarged to include the former tack
room, stables, and old beer cellar.

-
In
the Old Tack Room, we've provided a carpeted dining, function
and family room.
-
In
the Old Stables, new toilets for men, ladies
and the disabled have been built, with
baby changing facilities.
-
Behind
the fireplace which we uncovered three months after we moved to the
George in July, 2000, a new cold cellar
ensures all beers are maintained in prime condition. This is especially
important for our four real ales, including two beers
brewed uniquely for us --King George and Gorgeous George.
-
The
Old Beer Cellar provides the setting for a comfortable 30
seat restaurant.
-
The
Pub Garden has been renovated and made
into a terrace with an all weather heated
and covered patio, including a children's area and boules piste.
-
The
Old Coach House has been converted into a disabled-accessible self-contained
two bedroom flat which we now occupy.
-
The
Loft above one of the gables has been renovated into an en-suite twin-bedded
room.
For diners, we insist on a total commitment to quality food prepared
from the best local fresh ingredients cooked to order. All our food
is home-made, including the puddings and luscious ice creams. The
menu has expanded since July 2001 when we first
began serving food at the pub. Now organic, vegetarian, game and fresh
fish specials complement the regular menu. Special needs are catered
for, and individually tailored menus can always be worked out for
functions or special events.
Trained
in cordon-bleu cookery, Veryan began her cookery career at the British
Embassay in Norway. After doing director's lunches in the City, she
came to Somerset in 1980 to be the chef at the No.3 restaurant in Glastonbury.
No. 3 became a highly acclaimed restaurant, rated one of the top 20
in the country.
In 1983 Veryan married Peter, a Canadian. After starting a family they
moved to Canada in 1984. Peter completed his Master's degree in International
Development, and in 1988 they volunteered as Christian aid workers in
Bangladesh. In 1991 seven years of service in Tanzania began, but they
settled back in England in 1998 so their four children could have a
stable home and country in which to grow up.
Veryan's
cookery talents remained dormant until July 2000 when the opportunity
to buy the George Inn at Croscombe became a reality. There's been
no looking back since! A friendly welcome awaits everyone.
